Back in the day, The San Francisco Examiner had a sportswriter named Merv Harris, who was considered the godfather of prep sports writing in the Bay Area during the 1970s and '80s. He painstakingly kept stats and records and would write a weekly column where he gave what he called "A Tip of the Hat" to any noteworthy performance.
You knew you'd arrive when you got mentioned in that column.
This is our homage to the late Merv Harris.
