Try to keep up because this might get confusing. John the Sign Guy, Pacifica’s flagship printer of T-shirts, stickers and banners, is run by Mike Biancalana, a lifelong Pacifican who came up as a catcher in the coastal town’s storied youth baseball leagues.

He took it over from John Barnes – hence the name – who technically still owns the business that got its start more than 40 years ago when it was called Offshore Screen Printing and was run by a notorious motorcycle gang (yes, that one).

Biancalana, 66, a Pacifica Sports Hall of Fame inductee for his work in growing the town’s youth football program, has been calling the shots at John’s for about 20 years and has no intention of retiring any time soon.

The shop, located one block off the ocean at 1830 Palmetto Ave., caters to the needs of nearby cities and local school districts as well as the youth sports leagues, but also has a reputation for specialized individual work.

“We have the support of the community,” he said. “The people in this community are very loyal. It’s a family-oriented community and people love that. It’s why they stay.”

Biancalana, who started playing Little League in 1969, has a keen knowledge of Pacifica’s strong baseball reputation. Many of the players he grew up playing baseball with and against in youth league and at Oceana High continue to be lifelong friends – and clients of his business.

“There are a lot of people still around,” he said. “I don’t know why I get the respect that I probably don’t deserve, but it’s special.”
