Valley Christian hasn't given up a run to start the season. The Warriors have two victories and an unscathed earned-run average after a week.
As a result, Valley remains on top of this week's rankings of the top teams on the Peninsula. Originally, we felt 16 teams – a Sweet 16 – was a good number of teams to rank. After a week of play, we've narrowed the list to 13. Call it the Lucky 13 – if you want. It just seems like a better number, something for teams to aspired to achieve.
That said, Terra Nova, which was ranked last week and might still be there had a long fly ball by Riordan's Chase Oliver not been ruled a three-run game-tying home run in the Tigers' 4-4 season-opening tie. Jared Milch's team did nothing to fall from the weekly poll, but the Tigers will have several chances – beginning Monday night at No. 4 Capuchino – to show its worth.
This is a big week for a lot off teams, Valley Chistian included. The Warriors will be tested this week when they travel to Wilcox for the annual Mike Hazlett Baseball Tournament, an eight-team test they won last year and 12 times since the 2000 season.
Mitty tumbled to the No. 8 spot after being drubbed by San Ramon Valley, while St. Ignatius Prep (2) and Serra (3) and Cap (4) climbed in the rankings after big first weeks.
New additions include Bellarmine, Sacred Heart Cathedral and Riordan, meaning all out West Catholic Athletic League teams are represented in this week's poll.
