Quinten Marsh is one of those throwbacks, a ballplayer who does it all, whether on the mound or at the plate. And so, when given a choice of which he would prefer to do at Stanford, one of college baseball’s traditional powers, he couldn’t decide.

So, he won’t.

Marsh will attempt a rarity of today: pitching, while also getting his licks in at the plate and playing the outfield when he's not on the mound.

“I'm going there, planning to do both,” he said.  “I’m going to try and hit and pitch as long as I can. That’s very difficult because both sides of the field are so tough, so trying to focus on both of them can be really hard.”

If anyone can do it, it’s Marsh, says teammate Rohan Kasanagottu.

“In my opinion, he’s the best player in Northern California,” Kasanagottu said. “Quinten Marsh is just a phenomenal athlete. … He’s the ultimate competitor.”

And between now and stepping foot onto the Stanford campus next fall – where he'll be reunited with his brother Tatum, a freshman outfielder for the Cardinal – he and his loaded Valley Christian Warriors teammates will try to claim the CCS-Division I crown that eluded them last season.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound southpaw is part of a pitching staff that goes deeper than any school in Northern California and is the odds-on favorite to win in the rugged WCAL. Through 10 days of the season, the Warriors are unbeaten and have already thrown two no-hitters, while allowing just one earned run.

It's put a bull's-eye on Valley's back – one that the Warriors lean into more than they fear.

“It pushes us to know that everyone wants to beat us,” he said. “We have to go into each game seriously, ready to play with the intensity we need.”

2024 statistics: 9-3 record, 1.14 earned-run average and 88 strikeouts, while hitting .378 at the plate.

In their own words:

“Baseball, itself, is an amazingly fun game. And I love playing it.”

What others are saying:

“What he’s been able to do the last three years at Valley Christian is like no other.”
