The significance of team sports can be boiled down to a single day when David Mead was 13 years old and playing in San Mateo’s youth baseball program.

It was a late-spring Saturday and Mead had a game, but he also had tickets to a Day on the Green music festival at the Oakland Coliseum. The plan was to check in at the game, play a few innings and scoot out of there early enough to get to the concert.

He got there and discovered that his team had just nine players. Like it or not, he was staying. And that turned out to be fortuitous because his teammate, a pitcher named Paul Kaye threw a no-hitter that day.

He got to the all-day concert late, missing the opening act – Carlos Santana, he remembers. It was more important to be on the field.

“I was there for my teammate that day,” said Mead, the former San Mateo High and College of San Mateo backup quarterback who this year will commemorate 30 years with Primerica, a national financial services provider. “Spots teaches you to be a part of a team, to set goals and to deal with failure.

“That’s a part of life, too.”

Sports also showed Mead the importance of hard work and perseverance, he says, recalling his early struggles in the industry. He just kept moving forward. In 30 years, Mead has built a portfolio that spans the majority of the United States and boasts more than 1,350 clients.

He recently got his fiduciary certification, which requires him to act in the best interest of his clients on every measure. It seems almost meaningless because Mead has always done what’s best for his clients – personal gain notwithstanding.

“I’ve always been someone who takes interests of others ahead of my own,” he said.

Mead resides on the Washington-Oregon border and runs a shop that currently has nine full-time associates, but his clients are scattered all over the country, including a large pocket in the Bay Area, which brings him back regularly to see family and friends.
