Coach: Neal Goldstein

2024 Record: 14-13

The Bearcats return seven starters from a year ago, including outfielder Hayato Nishiyama, who hit .378 and had a .478 on-base percentage last season, and pitcher Christian Louie who posted a 1.70 earned-run average.

“We should have a solid lineup,” said coach Neal Goldstein.

Nishiyama, who is here from Japan for one more year while his father works on the Peninsula brings the element of speed to the Bearcats.

“If I’m fast, I can hit a grounder or bunt and get a hit,” he said. “If I run hard all the way to first, the infielder might panic and make an error or a wild pitch.”

Nishiyama’s presence has made a big difference for San Mateo, Goldstein said.

Louie and Jesus Olivas figure to be San Mateo’s top two pitchers, while newcomer Hudson Brandt also will be counted on for innings.

Second baseman Neel Sardesai hit .304 last year, while first baseman Julian Bleess had a .448 on-base percentage.
