SANTA CLARA – More urgent for Carlmont than Tuesday's 8-2 loss to Wilcox on Tuesday was the shoulder injury sustained by Henry Massey in the top of the third inning while diving back into first base on a pickoff play.

Coach Ryan Hamilton wouldn't speculate, but there's a chance the senior right-hander might be facing a stint on the sidelines.

Massey is considered a key piece to Carlmont's pitching rotation.

He worked just two innings – giving up three runs, two of them earned, on three hits – to the hard-hitting Chargers (3-1), who advanced into the winner's bracket of their own tournament with the victory.

The difference in this game was twofold: Wilcox made the place defensively and came through with big hits when they got runners in scoring position.

The Scots (2-1), who committed two fielding errors, stranded 10 runners on base and had just one hit – a first-inning double by Zach Luzzo that gave them a 1-0 lead – with runners in scoring position.

Three Things We Liked

  • Both teams swung the bats. The two teams combined for 19 hits – 11 by the Chargers – and stepped into the box with an aggressive approach. The Scots may have been overly aggressive, swinging at the first pitch seven straight times to start the game.
  • Wilcox first baseman Jacob Prettol looks the part. The 6-foot-4 senior is big and hulking in the No. 3 spot of Wilcox's potent batting order. His double to deep right-center field in the first inning tied the contest. He added another run-scoring hit in the sixth inning.
  • Luzzo didn't take a bad swing all day. He doubled in the first inning. Singed in the third and line out to shortstop. He took a called third strike in the seventh on a 3-2 pitch, but was convinced the pitch was low. The kid is seeing the ball right now. And hitting it.

Play of the Game

The Scots trailed 3-1 in the top of the third, but had the bases loaded with no outs. Grant Goetz hit it on the money, but right at third baseman Dylan Jackson, who started a second-to-first double play that all but ended the rally.

He Said It

"If we're making good contact being aggressive is fine. I just thought as the game went on, we weren't adjusting. We were just out in front too much. We've just
got to be able to adjust to that faster." – Ryan Hamilton, Carlmont coach.
