They played twice this week. Each team won once. In other words, nothing changed. So, Serra remains No. 1 in our weekly poll, while Saint Francis is still in the No. 2 spot.
But keep an eye on No. 3 St. Ignatius Prep, which is beginning to hit its stride and opens a two-game series at Serra on Saturday at noon.
The Padres opened the season with 1o straight wins before being shut out at home by Saint Francis last Tuesday. They bounced back three days later and handled the Lancers in Mountain View, 5-3.
With each WCAL school playing four league games over the next eight days, this might be perhaps the most challenging week of the season. Serra's week might be the most daunting with Valley Chirstian on Tuesday and Friday, and St. Ignatius on Saturday and Tuesday.
Menlo-Atherton, which won two games from Sacred Heart Prep this week by scoring 18 runs and allowing just two hits, moves up to the No. 5 spot, while Terra Nova, which has won eight straight games, was the Peninsula's biggest climber this week, checking in at, fittingly, No. 8.
Meanwhile, Woodside, which has rallied from a slow start and now stands at 7-4, has cracked the top 13.
Rank | Team | Summary |
---|---|---|
1. | Junipero Serra (11-1) | Bounced back from first loss of the season in fine fashion. The next eights days -- series with Valley and SI -- will be telling. |
2. | Saint Francis (9-3) | Lancers are sitting pretty after wnning three of four against Valley and Serra. Pitchings is its strength. |
3. | St. Ignatius Prep (6-2-2) | Wildcats, with a talent-filled roster, are lurking -- and ready to pounce. Serra series begins Saturday. |
4. | Valley Christian (8-3) | Was Quinten Marsh 3-run homer a sign the Warriors bats are waking up? Serra awaits on Tuesday and Friday. |
5. | Menlo-Atherton (9-4) | The Bears allowed only two hits and scored 18 runs this week. A top-five ranking seems justified. |
6. | Archbishop Mitty (8-3) | Loss to Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday showed WCAL's depth. It also showed the potential pitfalls that await. |
7. | Capuchino (9-4) | Mustangs romped to two non-league victories this week. Return to Bay competition. |
8. | Terra Nova (8-2-1) | The week's biggest riser after winning eighth straight. No. 8 seems right for the Toddler Tigers. |
9. | Bellarmine (5-6) | The Bells are 0-4 in WCAL play, but have competed in each loss. |
10. | The King's Academy (5-3) | While other kids are doing homework, Knights are doing mission work in faraway lands. Perspective. |
11. | Sacred Heart Cathedral (7-5) | A season reset after end-of-week wins over Mitty and St. Mary's in 10. Irish have the arms to pull off | 12. | Sequoia (6-5) | Lost to Burlingame on Friday, but regrouped Saturday in win over Riordan. Waiting for Ravens to go on a tear. |
13. | Woodside (7-4) | The Wildcats have a legitimate lineup -- check the numbers -- to go with a suddenly resurgent rotation. |
Dropped out: Carlmont (5-6). Creepers: Burlingame (6-5).
