In the big picture, a weekly ranking means little. Everything – through league schedules, head-to-head matchups and the upcoming Central Coast Section tournament – will eventually be sorted out.

So, at this point, gripe if you must, but the best six teams on the Peninsula hail from the West Catholic Athletic League. The numbers from the first three weeks of the season bear that out. And so do their records.

The real question for us is how those teams stack up.

Serra with 10 straight wins to start the season is the obvious top choice, while Saint Francis, with two wins over Valley Chistian this week and an 8-2 record, seems like a legitimate No. 2.

And then what?

  • St. Ignatius Prep (4-2-2) had the best win this year – a season-opening 2-0 shutout of nationally ranked Granada.
  • Valley Christian (6-3) has perhaps the best pitching staff in the state and a boatload of Division I talent.
  • Archbishop Mitty (7-2) is the defending CCS Division I champion and has won four straight games.

Nate Sutton is building something special at Bellarmine. The Bells sit at No. 6 and are going to win their share of games over the next eight weeks, but sorting through the jumble of three through five is a fool's errand. It'll likely change over the next week weeks of them playing each other, but this is where we think it stands today.

Meanwhile, there wasn't much movement – no new teams – but Terra Nova (5-2-1) with five straight wins climbed two spots to No. 11, while Carlmont and Sequoia – Nos. 12 and 13, respectively – each fell to .500 and are still searching for answers as the PAL Bay Division season begins for each this week.
