Until Valley Christian's pitching falters, we see no reason to move the Warriors from the top spot.
Then again, Serra continues to make a strong case of its own to lay claim to be No. 1. The Padres won three games this week and are perfect in their first six games. But – as stated earlier – Valley Christian's pitching has been the story of this season's first two weeks.
Consider that in five games, the Warriors, who have used nine pitchers this year, have allowed just one earned run – and earned-run average of 0.21 – while giving up 12 hits.
In their run through the Mike Hazlett tournament, they allowed a grand total of three hits, including just two in a 3-0 victory over Mitty, the team that beat them in the CCS-Division I title game a year ago.
Serra leapfrogged St. Ignatius Prep in the rankings by beating No. 4 Capuchino and two teams from the Stockton area.
The Wildcats tied Acalanes and lost on an inside-the-park grand-slam homer at Cardinal Newman. St. Ignatius Prep will host Palo Alto and Los Gatos this week.
Rank | Team | Summary |
---|---|---|
1. | Valley Christian (5-0) | Rolled through Wilcox tourney by allowing just three hits. |
2. | Junipero Serra (6-0) | Big week for Josephson. Padres keep rolling. |
3. | St. Ignatius Prep (1-1-2) | Toughest schedule on the Peninsula will prepare Cats for WCAL. |
4. | Saint Francis (5-1) | Three strong pitching performances this week. Bats will come alive eventually. |
5. | Capuchino (5-1) | No shame in a road loss at Serra. Keep an eye on Ciardella's knee. |
6. | Mitty (3-2) | Too many strikeouts in 3-0 loss to Valley, but everyone says that. |
7. | Menlo-Atherton (4-2) | Had four-game streak snapped Saturday in loss to Lancers. Solid week. |
8. | Sacred Heart Cathedral (4-1) | Irish winning with pitching. Big game Tuesday at Burlingame. |
9. | Carlmont (3-2) | Took some lumps in Santa Clara this week. Massey's shoulder could be an issue. |
10. | The King’s Academy (3-2) | A loss to Los Gatos was followed by a victory over Los Altos. |
11. | Bellarmine (3-2) | Bells were competitive in a week where they lost two of three. |
12. | Burlingame (4-0) | Still unbeaten, but we're waiting to see who the Panthers are. |
13. | Riordan (3-2-1) | Young and improved. The Crusaders play with emotion, which can hurt them. |
